ARTIST STATEMENT
My work begins where speed ends. In an era where algorithms calculate the shortest route and images must be instant and direct, I deliberately choose the detour and the standstill. Artificial Intelligence offers us frictionless road maps, but you only build your own inner compass by walking the road yourself. As a Painter on the Road, I choose wandering over the autopilot.
My practice is rooted in the conviction that true creation begins with destruction. With charcoal, ink, paper and ash, the primordial elements or Stardust from which we and the earth are made, I strip images back to their core. I erase, tear, and rebuild layer by layer. My materials are not passive tools I bend to a result, but equal partners in an unpredictable dialogue. The making process is not hidden behind a smooth varnish; the scars of searching, the tear and the smear, remain visible. They are not the remnants of the work, they are the work.
My artistic practice is a plea for Artistic Intelligence: a deliberate, physical choice for the analogue, the handmade and the slow. I do not exclude technology, but I resist the danger of the ‘too smooth’, against systems that strip us of the essential friction of wandering, of choosing for ourselves and of failing. Where algorithms strive for calculated, seamless perfection, the mistake in my craft is not a flaw, but the absolute proof of human presence.
Imagination is not a luxury but an existential necessity. Not the blind following of a programme, but truly seeing. Not the passive repetition of data, but the courage to bring something radically new into the world in pure uncertainty.
That is the difference between functioning and being human. That is why I make art.
BIO
Willem Boronski is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of painting, collage and video animation. His practice is rooted in the conviction that true creation begins with destruction. With charcoal, ink, paper and ash, the primordial elements or Stardust from which we and the earth are made, he strips images back to their core. Layers built up, erased and torn form the visible scars of a making process he never conceals.
As a Painter on the Road, Boronski chooses wandering over the autopilot. Along the way, his work and his convictions build together, in the knowledge that an inner compass only develops by walking the road yourself. His artistic practice is a plea for Artistic Intelligence: a deliberate choice for the analogue, the handmade and the slow, as a response to an era that regards imagination as a luxury. For Boronski, it is an existential necessity.
