The Importance of Imagination: Thinking Freely Through Art
Imagination is not a luxury. It is a way of thinking, feeling, and looking ahead. In a time when we are inundated with opinions, data and systems, art does not offer an answer — but space. That space reminds us of the importance of imagination in helping us remain free, curious, and human.
At Studio Boronski, we believe that you should not learn about art, but from art. Not analyzing, but experiencing. Not explaining, but imagining. Imagination not only makes new worlds imaginable, but also enables us to continue to think freely. It is not an escape, but a resistance. No decoration, but tools.
How Studio Boronski HelpsWhat Is Imagination?
Imagination is the ability to imagine something that is not (yet) there. It is the mental space in which possibilities arise. Einstein called it more important than knowledge; Spinoza saw it as the bridge between reason and emotion; Nussbaum as a condition for empathy.
Imagination is:
- The ability to think outside the known.
- A way to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
- The source of hope, change and freedom.
“Those who can no longer imagine, are easily led.” – Boronski
In art, imagination is not a tool, but the heart of the work. It lets us see between the lines. Between what is — and what could be.
Learning from Art Instead of About Art
What does that mean: learning from art? Simply put:
- Learning about art = style, technique, art history, theory.
- Learning from art = looking, feeling, interpreting, reflecting.
When you learn from art, you become part of the image. You don’t become a consumer, but a co-creator. As in the work She is Buying a Stairway to Heaven — where the staircase symbolizes the human search for meaning, but the direction remains open.
Art does not ask questions — it invites you to ask questions.
What Does Art Do to Our Imagination?
Art activates imagination in multiple ways:
- Slowing down thinking — art takes you out of the pace of the world.
- Breaking patterns — it breaks open automatic reactions.
- Opening up alternative realities — it shows that things can be done differently.
- Creating connection — between people, between times, between perspectives.
Art is not an illustration of ideas — it is a way of thinking.
Studio Boronski and the Importance of Imagination
Studio Boronski works with symbolic imagery that invites imagination. Think of:
- The staircase: symbol of transition, desire, ambition.
- The common thread: connection in fragmentation.
- Amor fati: not to suffer fate, but to embrace it.
- The journey: not the answer, but the search is central.
In series such as Chained Memories of Drift, imagination becomes visible in layers, contrasts and open compositions. The images are not finished — they are waiting for your gaze.
